Am I Eligible?

We recommend that all our interns have the following personal criteria: highly responsible, self motivated, reliable, and friendly with customers, along with having some experience in the food or hospitality industries. However, in order to qualify for the Australian Working Holiday Visa, you will also need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be between the ages of 18 to 30 at time of application
  • Have a passport and a high school diploma (or equivalent qualification)
  • Have not entered Australia on a Working Holiday (417) or Work & Holiday (462) visa
  • Be a citizen of one of the following countries: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chile, China, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, or Uruguay.

What will I be doing?

Your work experience here in Australia will allow you to get a fantastic insight into the way that the hospitality industry works, including such fields as food and drink, guest services, and much, much more. All the while, you will also get the chance to fully immerse yourself in Australian culture, working alongside locals in one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. You will initially sign a six-month contract with an Australian resort, hotel, or restaurant, and following this you will have the option to work for a further six months with another company. Currently, the following positions are available:

  • Chefs, Cooks, & Kitchen Staff
  • Food & Beverage Attendants
  • Bartenders and Bar Staff
  • Porters and Steward
  • Customer Service Associates
  • Guest Room Attendants
  • Receptionists
  • Shop Assistants

Employment Destination 

Depending on your prior qualifications and experience, as well as the time of year, you will be placed in a successful, high end resort or tourist destination here in Australia. You might find yourself working alongside the word-famous Great Barrier Reef, or perhaps in the modern cultural hub of Darwin. For the more adventurous, you can even find a placement in the outback or the incredible island of Tasmania, with its outstanding natural beauty.

Where will I live?

In most cases, participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. There’s no need to worry, though- there’s plenty of housing to go around here, and we’ll put you up with 2 nights of hostel accommodation when you first arrive while you finalize your arrangements elsewhere. We are also here to help with an orientation course before you leave, so that you’re fully prepared to find housing for yourself in Australia. Finally, our support office located in Melbourne will be able to help you if you need it. Often our employees will be able to offer accommodation to interns, so just let us know if this is something you would be interested in.

Will I Be Able to Get My Money Back?

As we offer our job placements under a cultural exchange program, we are required to charge a fee for our services. However, once you have completed your placement, you will receive your initial fee back in the form of a tax reimbursement. While you are working here, you’ll be charged a higher rate of tax since you are a non-resident, but we will arrange for a resident tax status for you at the end of your first six months here. In many cases, this reimbursement is a greater amount than your initial fee and upfront costs, meaning you won’t end up paying a penny for this whole experience!

Estimated Associated Costs Example

The example below is based on the very minimum amount of hours that you will be working on your placement, and the minimum wage. However, in most cases, hourly wage and hours per week exceed the example below. Chefs in our program earn $50,000+ during their 12-month placements.

Minimum Salary: $17.29/hr (30-hour work week)

*Please note calculations are subject to certain conditions being adhered to and subject to the discretion of the Australian Tax Office. A participant must stay in Australia for a minimum of 183 days to be eligible for tax refund.

6-month estimated earnings: $13,486.72 (AUD)

12-month estimated earnings: $26,972.72 (AUD)

Is travel medical insurance available?

It is available, but it’s also completely optional. If you wish, we can set you up with travel medical insurance so that you can rest assured that if something should happen to you, you will be fully covered and won’t have to deal with any unforeseen expenses.
